a week to go to the big day. everyone is stressing about the last minute details on our 6 month trip to Izmir, Turkey right now. we cant wait to go and are hungry for some Turkish delight.

  1. One more day and then we leave. The kids are excited, as are we, and a little scared, as are we. We had Turkish sodas last night for dinner with the sour cherry favored by the girls and the lemony/Juicy Fruit favored by the boys. The sodas accompanied a great (I'm guessing not-very-Turkish) meal of baby back ribs inspired by Sam's fear that Ramadan might mean pork was especially out of favor in Turkey. Who knows? All part of the adventure and discovery. In any event we got back on track with baklava for dessert.

With a day to go the kids have finally started to internalize the idea that we'll be somewhere very different in a few hours. Their solution? YouTube Turkish instruction of course. The computerized pronunciation eventually lost out to the television but Zach did a good job of acquiring the basics i.e. "hello, how are you?", "my name is Zach what's yours?", "where is the bathroom" and "how much does it cost?"

More tomorrow when I'm guessing the current fever pitch will rise to its own fever pitch as we try to guess what we'll discover we've forgotten as soon as the door of the plane closes. Frankly we're not used to being this prepared and it's turning inward on itself like a test where we've been given too much time and we go back and start changing answers.
